It's been a little while since I've been able to be consistently active over here. I just wanted to share an update firstly to say that I'm sorry about that: it's never my intention to go quiet over here, whether it's replying to current threads or trying to start new ones. But unfortunately, my life offline has been pretty hectic, particularly where my work is concerned.

To put it succinctly as possible: I'm American and I work for a non-profit organization that our current political administration is actively trying to dissolve. While it's still operating today, each day is pretty much a stress test to keep funding coming in when a large amount of people hate the work that my co-workers and I do every day for our community.

In the past 5-6 weeks alone, I've had two important trips for my job that, alongside my day-to-day duties, have left me with zero energy for anything else. To the point that I was sick this past week and had to miss one of my favorite anime conventions of the year entirely due to having no time to recuperate from one cold that I got another right when I was healing from the first one. To say I was disappointed would be putting it mildly: I'm burnt out, and yet I cannot afford to take time off. Instead, I'm being asked to participate on nationwide non-profit councils to help navigate the current political climate as well as mentor university student interns, on top of my current workload.

To that end, I'm hoping the busier travel portions of my year are coming to a close so I will at least be able to keep up with the few threads I currently have and try to take on a couple more. But I ask for patience, both for IC and OOC conversations: when I'm not working or replying to things here, I'm watching what little TV/movies I have time for, trying to fit in a book here and there, and sleeping as much as I can. It's easy to be discouraged right now, and that takes away from some of the energy and time I have over here. But I'm trying to remedy that.

Adding to the Trolls au idea, Branch is still... well... he's still Branch. The main difference is that it isn't music itself he hates and, while he doesn't like how loud Poppy and the other trolls are, he doesn't blame music and singing for killing his grandmother. He blames himself.

He is a man who is born on the stage and destined to perform, but is too scared to do so in public because every time he'd done so before, it led to disaster. He sang with his brothers for their biggest concert ever, and they immediately left him. He sang for his grandmother, and she gets eaten by a Bergan. And if Chef finds them during the 20-year anniversary party, you can bet Branch will probably find a way to blame himself because he gave into the temptation and allowed himself to sing again.

A Tobias detail that's come to my notice recently is how, when he uses a nickname for someone, it's always intended with a double meaning. People tend to view it as purely sarcasm which it partly is, but nothing is ever that clean-cut and obvious with Tobias, he thinks far too much to end up saying things that are easy to comprehend by everyone. 🚬 In Ash's case, the most often used nicknames are "sunshine" and "princess" (alongside the related 'your highness/majesty'); with "sunshine" doubling as both a deeply ironic petname given how grumpy the guy is most of the time, but also as his role in Tobias' life— Tobias used to be bored more times than he can count, and his life was pretty bleak and repetitive, but ever since Ash stepped into it it's become much brighter and livelier, to the point Tobias finds himself glad to still be alive if only because he gets to spend one more day with Ash.

As for "princess", it's a nickname clearly laced with hints of sarcasm considering the life Ash's been forced to lead, but it simultaneously shows the sort of life Tobias wants to give Ash from here on out. A life worth a royal, except different from Dino's concept of it in the sense that while they both offer Ash material things, Tobias also wants Ash to be rid of the stress and worries that keep plaguing him— a life of luxury, comfort and happiness, with the certainty that he'll have everything he wants at his beck and call as soon as he wants it, just like a real prince/ss would. This even includes Tobias making changes to his own lifestyle to better cater to Ash's preferences— slightly less reckless, far less flirtatious with others, even more careful with his words when bringing Ash up in conversations (i.e instead of saying 'I'll do [x] if Ash wants it', he's more likely to say ' Ash told me a while back that he'd like to [x]... maybe I should do [x] after all.' since this minimal change in phrasing is bound to avert many worst-case scenarios in which people might try to pressure/persuade Ash just to ensure that Tobias will do what they want, and instead by phrasing stuff this way, chances are that people (whether they do or don't personally know Ash) will start appreciating Ash far more without him even doing anything), so on and so forth!

While he'd heard whispers through the barn that morning, people being even worse than clucking hens at times when it came to gossip, Colt himself wasn't all the surprised to hear the princess was seen around the horses. Horses and royalty went together just as well as they did with cowboys, not to mention that just because she was a princess, that didn't mean she couldn't have intersts some might feel out of place for one of such high standing.

He'd given her a nod and a 'howdy' in greeting as he passed by on the way to his horse; a large, but rather skittish brown Appalooa stud that eyed this new person warily, albeit while stanidng closer to Sonia than it would most other strangers, making Colt wonder just how long she'd been standing there.

He'd had a thought while saddling up his horse, praticed hands working on their own while the cowboy stared off in the distance over his horse, that maybe she had horses back home and was missing them, just as he had when first arriving, before he'd gotten the school to allow him to keep Flicker on the grounds. And that? That just wouldn't do.

"You lookin' t' ride, missy? I'll let ya borrow Flicker here, or my baby sister's got a mare over yonder." A head nod at a small, black and white painted horse a short distance away that was hooving at some grass, it's shiny white mane and tail done up in braids and tied off with bright yellow ribbons. "She's got a bit more spirit, but somethin' tells me you won't have no problem tamin' 'er. I'd bet my best hat that equine's in yer blood just as it is mine."

So, I received this question twice for this meme and I'm going to answer them separately. Mostly as after writing this muse for over five years now and writing text-based roleplay for over two decades, I've had a lot of time to think about this.

But for this specific ask, I'm going to focus on the Sonia Nevermind-specific things that bother me about her character and the fanon interpretation, while I'll leave some of the tropes that get attached to this muse for the next one.

Finally, if you haven't played any of the Danganronpa games: Spoilers ahead for everything.

So, in no particular order:

The idea that Sonia is stupid/dumb/an idiot. I absolutely hate this take for one reason: she's not. She's sheltered, there is a difference.

Sonia cannot have all the skills that even the canon insists she have without being pretty smart, at least on an intellectual level. She has some degree in fluency in thirty languages, alongside knowledge in a variety of academic subjects as well as military training and diagnostic medicine.

Does she get phrases and slang mixed up? Absolutely. But Japanese isn't her first language. It probably isn't even her fifth language, at least in my headcanons for her. And she's learned colloquial Japanese through anime, dramas, and film: not much in the way of practical, conversational skills.

Is she a bit naive? Absolutely. But again, she's sheltered: she's grown up in a castle where her every need was seen to, before attending the most exclusive private school in her country where she was, in the eyes of the students and staff, a celebrity.

Now, she's a little bit stupid when it comes to someone having genuine feelings for her (unlike Kazuichi's tendency to put her on a pedestal for superficial reasons) and she can't cook, clean, play/sing music, or draw/paint for the life of her. But she's not an idiot. She's actually pretty intuitive when it comes to other people, and she relishes in learning something new every day.

The idea presented in free time events that Sonia would happily share an equal amount of power and authority over Novoselic with Hajime simply because he looks like the hero of Novosonian lore.

I hate this scene so much. Out of every Sonia scene in every game, I despise this one the most. Because it reads, to me, that she's just sitting around waiting for a hero to save her because god forbid Kodaka and Danganronpa give women any real power, real agency, or anything to do with their lives that doesn't revolve around a man in this franchise, often the protag/hero (and yes I will still argue this applies in UDG even with Komaru as the protag). It's already been pretty well-established that this series sucks at depicting female characters for the most part (to the point they couldn't even allow for a female protag in V3 without killing her off. I would have loved to see the game fully through Kaede's eyes instead of Shuichi's for many reasons!), but this particular Sonia scene takes the cake for me.

Therefore, I refuse to acknowledge it exists and will choose instead to write Sonia as a woman who, while being born into her role as heir to the throne, will do everything in her power to make it feel rightfully earned and not relinquish it to anyone.

That Sonia should have died in the simulation because she's seen as useless compared to the other survivors.

Nope nope nope. Sonia may not be one for physical combat or hands-on technical skills, but that doesn't make her useless. She is clever and she is compassionate, and those two things are very important to hold onto as the survivors rediscover their hope and the desire to break out of the simulation and live.

Also Kodaka was a chickenshit who didn't let her actually use a tank, despite sharing the fact she has military training. Lame. Waiting for the terrible OVA to actually show Sonia using any of her skills was a poor choice (but it blessed us with icons).

That Sonia is a waste because she comes between/interrupts a Kazuichi/Gundham (Soudam) romance and therefore must be made evil/killed off/removed in some other fashion from the series.

Ah, another fandom take that makes me grimace.

Listen, I lived through the Gundam Wing years and have been a Relena fan since I was a young teenager. I went through it in that fandom and I've gone through it in Danganronpa.

There is enough space for every ship in every fandom. You don't need to vilify a character to make your ship 'valid.' Especially if that character happens to be female. Personally, I'm not a big fan of Soudam myself (I just don't see the chemistry there tbh!) but I'll never harass or shame other fans who enjoy it. Yet I've seen a lot of misogyny where Sonia is concerned by avid Soudam fans, declaring Sonia being romantically involved with either Gundham or Kazuichi is boring at best, disgusting at worst.

For shippers who think like this, do better.

Physical affection wasn't something Gundham sought out very often, at least that's what most people would assume. It wasn't that he didn't like to be touched, he was simply very choosey in who he allowed to touch him. He was much like a stray cat, knowing how cruel the world could be from living within it's darkest depths firsthand, he was slow to open up until it was proven he could without consequence.

Because of this, it was perhaps a surprise when the rather tired looking breeder had tipped forwards into the princess the moment they were away from prying eyes, his forehead coming to rest on her shoulder with hands just barely at her waist, waiting for permission to touch. "My apologies, She-Cat. I find that life upon this mortal plane has been most taxing to this vessal as of late. May we...stay like this, just for a moment?"

Ooh, I've been asked another hot/spicy take question today.

Any muses/fandoms you wish people would stop writing?

First, let me preface this with the following: everyone is allowed to write what they want. I don't actually wish people would stop writing anything.

However, I'd phrase this as: series/muses/themes I do not want to interact with due to lack of interest or I just dislike the series/characters that much.

Does that make sense?

Carrying on.

The biggest themes I don't want to write and will not choose to engage with on this blog is fantasy, particularly high/medieval fantasy with a bunch of magic powers. There's nothing wrong with the genre! I, like Sonia, actually read a bunch of romantic fantasy and enjoy it. It's just that Sonia is not a medieval/fantasy princess, and I think some muns who stumble across my blog see princess in the title and assume that's the flavor of storyline I provide over here.

There's plenty of muses who are that sort of royal, but I do not enjoy writing Sonia in that context. Contemporary slice of life? Of course. Historical-inspired verses? There's a few centuries that I like placing Sonia in based on how history has advanced. Sonia is much more Gossip Girl, Bridgerton, The Royals series from E!, and Tatler than she is Game of Thrones.

She's not fantasy. She's not a fantasy/medieval/magic power-wielding princess. I don't even like doing damsel in distress or arranged marriage that much with her, unless I've plotted with the mun beforehand and feel comfortable writing that content with them. Putting Sonia in a situation where she constantly needs to be rescued and/or is subjugated to serve someone, particularly a man because she's his legal property, gives me some very big icks.

We ain't doing that over here.

In the same vein, talking animals are also a no-go for this blog. And as much as Sonia loves the supernatural, beings like demons, ghosts, vampires, etc. are on a case-by-case basis. Even if Sonia wants to flirt with the hot vampire/demon willing to bite her-

As far as characters go, I'll keep my list to Danganronpa characters that, if given a choice, I'd prefer not to interact with. If you have a multi, I will probably pick any other DR muse available to write with, or a different series or OC, than the muses on this list. It's a combination of interaction burnout with these specific muses or I have such a strong dislike for them personally and it tends to seep into my portrayal:

Kokichi Ouma

Miu Iruma

Korekiyo Shinguji

Hajime Hinata, Shuichi Saihara, and Junko Enoshima are a case-by-case basis: I enjoy some dynamics with these characters but others I just don't care to write. Despair verses mostly, but I tend not to choose those anyway and prefer to reference them as past events in post-Despair verses. For Hajime and Shuichi specifically, it's more just fatigue and burnout with these muses: I get the protags and antags of DR 2 and V3 thrown at me pretty often in the past 5.5 years I've had this blog (everyone forgets about DR1 now sadly).

There's so many characters in Danganronpa, I wish more of them were represented in the tumblr RPC!

Is there anything you're excited to do this year?

RP wise? Keep trucking on with what I'm doing and hopefully start some new long-term threads and interactions too. I'm just not sure which mutuals are up for crafting something, either by plotting or winging it.

Outside of RP? I'm working on yet another dream costume for conventions this year! I'm finally doing one of Marie Antoinette's gowns from Rose of Versailles, and updating my Oscar costume as well because get you a woman who can do both. I'm also excited for a historical formal ball I'm attending in March as Penelope from Bridgerton (though I want to go to a proper Bridgerton ball eventually, and another ACOTAR/book ball! I have outfit options!).

And besides that, I gifted my husband a trip for Christmas to Universal Orlando Resort this October for the two of us! We're going to spend a week checking out everything new at the parks (barring Wizard Lady stuff: we refuse to pay for food and merch from those parts of the parks, even if part of our ticket admission lines her pockets, which is still annoying) from the past 6 years or so, especially Epic Universe and Super Nintendo World. He's a huge fan of Nintendo so that was the driving force behind the plan: we'll spend most of our Epic Universe day in that area of the park while venturing out to Dark Universe and Isle of Berk a little bit. And we're also doing Halloween Horror Nights as we're both huge horror fans! I can't wait to learn what the houses will be this year.
